Kenya Value Added Tax (VAT) Calculator 2025
Kenya charges Value Added Tax (VAT) at a standard rate of 16% as of 2025, under the VAT Act 2013 administered by the Kenya Revenue Authority. This tool lets you add VAT to a net price or extract the VAT already inside a tax-inclusive price, with a clear net / tax / gross breakdown.
How it works
Pick a mode and the calculator applies the rate:
- Add tax (amount is net): tax = net × 16%, gross = net + tax.
- Remove tax (amount is gross): net = gross ÷ 1.16, tax = gross − net.
The rate field is editable if you need to model a different rate, and all maths happens locally.
Example
For a net price of KSh 5,000 with the Add tax mode:
- VAT = 5,000 × 0.16 = KSh 800.00
- Gross total = 5,000 + 800 = KSh 5,800.00
To work backwards from a KSh 5,800 gross price, divide by 1.16 to recover the KSh 5,000 net and the KSh 800 VAT.
| Net price | VAT (16%) | Gross price |
|---|---|---|
| KSh 1,000 | KSh 160 | KSh 1,160 |
| KSh 5,000 | KSh 800 | KSh 5,800 |
| KSh 10,000 | KSh 1,600 | KSh 11,600 |
Standard rate is 16% per the VAT Act 2013; basic food, water, medical and education supplies are exempt or zero-rated. The tool runs entirely in your browser — no amounts or personal data are transmitted.
