Joules to Calories Converter
The joule (J) is the SI unit of energy, while the calorie (cal) is an older unit still common in chemistry, physics and nutrition. This converter changes joules into calories and back again so you can move between datasheets, textbooks and lab results that use different units.
Three types of calorie — and which one this converts
The word “calorie” is used for at least three different quantities, and confusing them is one of the most common unit-conversion mistakes in science and nutrition:

This converter uses the thermochemical calorie (1 cal = 4.184 J exactly), which is the standard for chemistry, physics, and most scientific contexts. The international-table calorie differs by less than 0.07% — negligible for most purposes.
The dietary “Calorie” printed on food labels is 1000 times larger. A 200-Calorie snack contains 200 kcal = 836,800 J. If you are converting nutrition information, use the kilojoules ↔ kilocalories converter instead, since food energy is always in kcal.

Worked examples
Chemistry context: A reaction releases 8,368 J of heat. In calories: 8,368 ÷ 4.184 = 2,000 cal = 2 kcal.
Physics context: A 1 kg object raised 1 metre gains 9.81 J of potential energy. In calories: 9.81 ÷ 4.184 ≈ 2.3 cal.
Converting food labels from kJ to kcal: A label shows 840 kJ per serving. In kcal (dietary Calories): 840,000 ÷ 4,184 ≈ 200.8 kcal. (For this you’d multiply kilojoules by 0.239, since 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.)
When you encounter joules and calories together
The most common real-world situation where both units appear is when comparing a European nutrition label (which lists energy in kilojoules) with a US label (which lists it in kilocalories). European labels often show both: for example, “840 kJ / 200 kcal per serving”. Both numbers mean the same energy; 840 kJ ÷ 4.184 = 200.8 kcal, confirming they agree.
In chemistry and physics, joules are the SI standard and calories appear in older data tables and American chemistry textbooks. Bond dissociation energies, heat of combustion figures, and specific heat capacity tables from different eras may use either unit.
