The Japan Childcare Leave Benefit Calculator estimates the 育児休業給付金 (childcare leave benefit) paid by Japan’s 雇用保険 (employment insurance) while you are on parental leave. It applies the 67% then 50% replacement structure and supports the 産後パパ育休 post-birth paternity option.
How it works
The benefit replaces a percentage of your standard daily wage (賃金日額), derived from your average monthly wage over the six months before leave divided by 30:
- First 180 days (about 6 months): 67% of the standard wage.
- From day 181 onward: 50% of the standard wage.
daily wage = 6-month average monthly wage / 30
phase 1 (<=180 days) = daily wage x 0.67
phase 2 (>180 days) = daily wage x 0.50
monthly benefit = daily benefit x 30 (per support unit)
The wage used is capped by an annually-set upper limit and protected by a lower limit, so very high or very low earners are adjusted toward those bounds.
Tips and notes
- The benefit is largely tax-free and exempt from social insurance contributions during leave, so the take-home replacement rate is effectively higher than 67%.
- 産後パパ育休 lets fathers take up to 4 weeks within 8 weeks of birth, in up to two blocks, paid at the same 67% rate.
- Leave can run until the child turns one, extendable to 18 months or 2 years if no nursery place is available.
- This tool uses 30-day support units, matching how Hello Work pays the benefit per period.
