How it works
In the hours-to-minutes direction the tool multiplies your value by 60. Because an hour is defined as 60 minutes, the conversion is exact and works for fractional hours too: a decimal like 2.5 becomes 150 minutes. Decimal hours versus hours-and-minutes notation
The most common source of confusion with this conversion is the difference between decimal hours and hours:minutes notation. They look similar but mean different things:
- 2.5 hours means 2 hours plus 0.5 × 60 = 30 minutes → 150 minutes total.
- 2:50 in hours:minutes notation means 2 hours and 50 minutes → 170 minutes total — a different value.
Payroll systems, GPS devices, and spreadsheet time functions often output decimal hours. If you see 1.75 on a timesheet, that is 1 hour 45 minutes (0.75 × 60 = 45), not 1 hour 75 minutes. The converter handles decimal hours correctly: enter 1.75 and it returns 105 minutes.
Practical scenarios
Timesheets: if your employer records work time in decimal hours (1.5, 2.25, etc.) but you need to submit in minutes for a different system, this is the fastest conversion path.
Cooking and recipes: recipes sometimes give total cooking time in decimal fractions. “Bake for 1.25 hours” is 75 minutes — easy to confirm here before setting a timer.
