This calculator works out gross weekly pay for an hourly worker in Detroit using the Michigan minimum wage of $10.10 per hour, the rate that applies inside the city. It pays overtime correctly at one and a half times your rate for any hours beyond 40 in the week.
How it works
Pay splits into two buckets. The first 40 hours are paid at your regular rate. Any hours above 40 are overtime and paid at 1.5x:
regular_pay = min(hours, 40) * rate
overtime_pay = max(hours - 40, 0) * rate * 1.5
gross = regular_pay + overtime_pay
For tipped workers, Michigan permits a reduced cash wage of $3.84/hr, but the law requires that cash wage plus tips reach the full $10.10/hr. The tool checks this and flags any shortfall the employer must make up.
Example
A worker logs 46 hours at $12.00/hr. Regular pay is 40 * 12 = $480. Overtime
is 6 * 12 * 1.5 = $108. Gross weekly pay is $588 before taxes.
Notes
This is gross pay only and uses the standard FLSA overtime rule. It does not model double-time, shift differentials, or salaried exemptions. Always confirm your exact rate against your pay stub and current Michigan wage law.
