Density calculator
Density measures how much mass is packed into a given volume — the relationship ρ = m ÷ V. This tool rearranges the formula so you can solve for density, mass or volume, useful for science homework, material selection and any buoyancy or weight estimate.
How it works
Starting from the definition density = mass ÷ volume, the calculator solves for whichever quantity you choose:
| Solve for | Formula |
|---|---|
| Density (ρ) | ρ = m ÷ V |
| Mass (m) | m = ρ × V |
| Volume (V) | V = m ÷ ρ |
Enter the two values you know in grams and cubic centimetres, and the result comes out in g/cm³ (or g, or cm³). To convert g/cm³ to kg/m³, multiply by 1000.
Example
A metal block with a mass of 1000 g and a volume of 500 cm³:
ρ = 1000 ÷ 500 = 2 g/cm³
That is twice the density of water (1 g/cm³), so the block sinks. Reversing it, a substance of 2 g/cm³ occupying 500 cm³ has a mass of 2 × 500 = 1000 g.
