When writing a UK cheque you must spell out the amount in words on the words line as well as entering the figures. This tool produces the exact wording British banks expect — title-cased, with pounds and pence spelled out and terminated with “Only” so the amount cannot be altered. It saves you double-checking large or awkward numbers by hand.
How it works
The integer part is converted using the Western numbering system, grouped by thousand, million, billion and trillion, with “and” inserted before the tens within each hundred (as in British usage: “one hundred and fifty”). The minor unit is pence (1 pound = 100 pence), spelled out separately as “pence”, or “penny” for exactly 1p. The whole line is title-cased and ends with “Only” so no extra words can be appended.
Example
Enter 1250.75:
One Thousand Two Hundred And Fifty Pounds And Seventy-Five Pence Only
| Figures | Words |
|---|---|
| £100 | One Hundred Pounds Only |
| £1,250.75 | One Thousand Two Hundred And Fifty Pounds And Seventy-Five Pence Only |
| £1.01 | One Pound And One Penny Only |
It is privacy-first: nothing leaves your browser. Always check the words against the numeric box before signing — you are responsible for what you write on a cheque.
