Calculate Albuquerque sales tax

New Mexico does not have a classic sales tax — it uses a gross receipts tax (GRT) that behaves the same way at the register. In Albuquerque the combined state, county, and city rate is about 7.875%. This calculator turns any pre-tax price into the tax owed and the final total.

How it works

The combined GRT rate is applied to the taxable amount, and exempt items (like qualifying groceries) are zeroed out:

taxable amount = exempt ? 0 : purchase amount
tax            = taxable amount * (rate / 100)
total = purchase amount + tax

The combined rate already merges the New Mexico state increment, the Bernalillo County share, and the City of Albuquerque share. Because GRT is location-coded, the exact rate can differ by address, so the field is editable.

Tips and example

A 100 purchase at 7.875% incurs 7.88 in tax for a 107.88 total. Toggle the grocery exemption on for a 100 unprepared-food purchase and the tax drops to 0, keeping the total at 100.

For a precise rate, look up your location code on the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue GRT rate schedule and paste it into the rate field.
