What is a NUIS / NIPT?

NUIS (Numri Unik i Identifikimit të Subjektit) is the unique identification number issued to every registered business by QKB, the Albanian National Business Center. It is commonly still called NIPT (its former name) and serves as both the company registration number and the VAT number for fiscal invoicing.

What is the NUIS format?

A NUIS is always 10 characters: one leading letter, eight digits, and one trailing letter — for example K12345678L. The leading letter historically encodes the registration year, and the trailing letter is a control character assigned by the register.

Does this tool verify the control letter mathematically?

No. The algorithm that assigns the trailing control letter is not published by QKB, so this tool validates the documented 10-character structure (letter, eight digits, letter) rather than recomputing the control character. A passing format check rules out the most common transcription mistakes.

Is a NUIS the same as a VAT number?

Yes. In Albania the NUIS doubles as the VAT identifier. When an Albanian business issues a fiscal invoice or registers for VAT, the same 10-character NUIS is used; there is no separate VAT number.

Is my NUIS sent to a server?

No. Validation runs entirely in JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored, and the tool works offline once loaded.

The NUIS (Numri Unik i Identifikimit të Subjektit) — still widely called the NIPT — is the unique identifier that QKB (Qendra Kombëtare e Biznesit, the National Business Center) assigns to every registered Albanian business. It acts as both the company registration number and the VAT number, appearing on fiscal invoices, procurement documents, and tax filings.

How it works

A NUIS is exactly 10 characters in a fixed pattern:

The first character is a letter that historically corresponds to the registration year (for example, letters advanced as new year-blocks opened). The middle is an 8-digit serial. The final character is a control letter assigned by the register. Because QKB does not publish the control-letter algorithm, validation is a structural format check: the right length, the right character classes, in the right positions.

Tips and notes

A valid format (such as K12345678L) confirms the identifier is well-formed and free of common copy-paste errors, but it does not prove the business is registered or active — only QKB’s online register can confirm that. When importing Albanian supplier data, normalise case and strip spaces before comparison, since the same NUIS may appear formatted differently across documents.
